EPDM FAQ

Understanding EPDM

What is EPDM?

EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer.

EPDM is an exceptionally strong, flexible and long-lasting synthetic rubber.

Why is EPDM so reliable?

EPDM is resistant to water, steam, cold (down to -40°C), heat (over 200°C), sunlight and ozone.

EPDM is highly effective in numerous applications; especially where structures, equipment and personnel require weather and safety protection or electrical insulation.

Applied in the right ways, EPDM delivers long-term performance and protection, every time.

How is EPDM used?

Wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, EPDM is probably not too far away!

EPDM is commonly used for window and door seals (buildings and vehicles), fridge and freezer seals, automotive hoses, windscreen wipers, water pumps, engine cooler tubes, fan belts, solar panel heat collectors, speaker cone surrounds, vehicle bumpers and playground surfaces. To name just a few.

Why is EPDM a great material for flat roofing?

EPDM is exeptionally tough, airtight and weathertight.

EPDM remains impervious to heavy rain and baking sun, puncture resistant and highly elastic for several decades.

It looks smart too.

Read on to find out how FlexiProof EPDM membranes are specially made with the best raw materials for robust and long-lasting flat roof protection.

What is EPDM made from?

EPDM compounds are made up of four main ingredients:

• EPDM polymer
• Carbon Black
• Paraffinic oils (used as softeners)
• Fillers/activators/crosslinking systems

Is all EPDM the same?

Not all EPDM is the same. The quality of a rubber roofing membrane depends almost entirely on how it was made. The most important parts of this are the compound formulation, the manufacturing process and the quality of the management systems behind it.

FlexiProof EPDM membranes are produced by TRC (Techno Rubber Company), a world-leading EPDM manufacturer based in Saudi Arabia. TRC membranes are the highest quality EPDM membranes available. TRC’s state-of-the-art facility is ISO 9001 certified, CE marked and produces over 10 million m² of EPDM annually.

In 2016, FlexiProof became the first company to bring TRC EPDM to the UK market. This is a milestone that remains central to who we are. Being first to raise standards in the market for cold-applied flat roofing systems.
While TRC membranes are now distributed across Europe, FlexiProof remains TRC’s original and longest-established authorised UK partner, backed by robust logistics and dedicated technical support.

The result: the highest-specification EPDM membrane available in the UK, certified worldwide and trusted nationwide.

Understanding Flexiproof Certifications

ISO 9001:2008 — Quality Management

TRC’s manufacturing facility is certified to ISO 9001:2008, the international standard for quality management systems. Certification requires demonstrating consistent processes, quality controls, and continuous improvement, from raw material sourcing through to finished membrane production.

In practice: Every roll of FlexiProof EPDM membrane is produced to the same documented quality standard. Batch-to-batch consistency is verified. You know what you’re getting, the highest quality EPDM membranes available.

CE Mark — EN 13956:2012

CE marking (Conformité Européenne) confirms the membrane complies with EU health, safety, and environmental requirements. TRC membranes are CE marked under EN 13956:2012, the European standard for flexible sheets used in roof waterproofing.

In practice: Specifiers and contractors can reference CE marking for compliance with UK and EU building regulation requirements. CE marked membranes carry legal standing for use in regulated construction.

B Roof (T4) — Fire Resistance

TRC membranes are tested to EN 13501-5, the European fire classification standard for roofing materials exposed to external fire. The B Roof (T4) rating demonstrates high resistance to both ignition and flame spread under severe fire exposure conditions.

In practice: The B Roof (T4) rating satisfies fire resistance requirements specified for flat roof systems under UK Building Regulations. It is a requirement for many commercial, residential, and mixed-use construction projects.

Root Penetration Resistance

Certified to three standards — ASTM D8014 (USA), BS EN 13948 (UK/EU), and ANSI/SPRI VR-1 (USA) — TRC membranes are verified to resist root penetration in vegetated and green roofing applications. Testing covers both standard and aggressive root growth scenarios.

In practice: Specifying TRC membranes for green roofs, sedum roofs, or any living roof application carries the confidence of triple-certified root resistance. No additional root barrier is required.

ISO 14025 — Environmental Product Declaration

TRC membrane production is covered by an ISO 14025 Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). This is an independently verified, third-party certified document detailing the full environmental impact of the product across its lifecycle. Data covered includes carbon footprint, energy consumption, water use and waste generation.

In practice: Contractors and specifiers working to BREEAM, LEED, or other green building certification frameworks can use the EPD to demonstrate sustainable material selection. The EPD is available on request.

ATG 3236E — Belgian Technical Approval

Following rigorous testing and audit by UBAtc (the Belgian Union for Technical Approval in Construction), TRC membranes received ATG 3236E Technical Approval — a construction industry certification confirming durability, reliability, and compliance with the technical requirements for roof waterproofing systems.

In practice: The ATG approval is recognised across European construction specification and procurement. It provides independent technical validation beyond CE marking for projects requiring additional assurance.

KOMO® Productcertificaat

The KOMO® productcertificaat is a quality certification mark administered by SGS Netherlands and widely recognised across the Dutch and broader European construction industry. Achieving KOMO® certification requires in-depth product testing and ongoing quality control audits.

In practice: KOMO® certification provides independent quality assurance for merchants and specifiers operating within European supply chains, confirming the product meets rigorous construction quality standards.

EN 15804+A2:2019/AC:2021

This European standard provides the framework for developing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for construction products. It ensures that environmental performance data is calculated, reported, and independently verified in a consistent and comparable way across the EU. The declaration covers the full lifecycle of the product.

In practice: Compliance with EN 15804 means the environmental data in the TRC EPD is credible, comparable with other certified products, and accepted for use in EU sustainability reporting frameworks.

ASTM D4637 — US EPDM Standard

ASTM D4637 is the American Society for Testing and Materials standard specification for EPDM rubber sheets used in single-ply roofing. Compliance demonstrates that TRC membranes meet the physical and performance requirements set by the global EPDM roofing industry’s founding standards body.

In practice: ASTM D4637 compliance demonstrates that TRC EPDM meets the original North American performance benchmark. The region where EPDM flat roofing was pioneered in the 1960s. An internationally recognised mark of quality.
