What is Efflorescence and how do we treat it?

Efflorescence is a natural result of the reaction between cement and water. The calcium hydroxide ‘lime’ is a product of this reaction, which rises to the surface of the tile. It cannot be seen when wet but when the tile is dry a chalky, white residue can be seen.

The occurrence of efflorescence on concrete roof tiles is erratic and unpredictable, but weather conditions seem to be a significant factor.

Efflorescence forms more readily when the concrete tile becomes wet and dries slowly, and therefore, occurs more often during winter.
It is generally only likely to occur in the early life of the product, so materials installed for a year or more without experiencing efflorescence are unlikely to be affected in the future.

FP McCann apply a water-based acrylic sealant to their concrete roof tiles to suppress the lime and prevent efflorescence.

Further expansion at the fully automated Cadeby factory will shortly mean the introduction of additional tile profiles. All FP McCann concrete roof tiles and accessories are of the highest standard and are covered by a 15 year guarantee.
